Energy Efficiency and Improved Air Quality

Energy efficiency is a huge concern to homeowners as 40% of the heat that escapes from your home leaves through the windows. And 50% of the solar heat that enters a room comes in through–you guessed it–the windows.

Energy efficient window treatments will provide year-round savings on both heating and cooling costs.  Having the correct blinds on your windows can reduce your heating costs by upto 45%.

In Summer, shade windows from the sun from sunrise to sunset – this will keep the sun off the house for as long as possible. Fit your windows with close-fitting Roller or Roman blinds to reduce the effect of the Suns damaging UV rays.

You can control the temperature of your home in winter without relying on power-hungry heating appliances. Fitting curtains and blinds that reduce heat loss and trap warmth saves on power bills and reduces our impact on the environment.

Close blinds or shutters on cold, cloudy days and especially at night to keep the heat inside. Tightly fitting Roller or Roman blinds made from closely woven fabrics like a cotton/polyester blend are also effective for reducing heat loss. Likewise, timber shutters can be very effective in insulating your home. Make the most of sunny days and open, blinds and shutters on windows facing the sun – this will let in sunlight and warmth, and will help to minimise the need to use your heating system.

North Shore Shutters NEW Honeycomb Cellular shades have earned the highest energy-efficiency rating and can block more than 60% of the heat transfer through a window. The honeycomb cells trap air between two sheets of fabric and cause an insulating blanket between the window and the room. This gives the blinds the ability to reflect heat from the exterior and keep rooms cooler. Opaque fabrics also have higher efficiency ratings. UV protection fabrics also protect the furniture and valuables in a room from harmful rays.  Recent developments in honeycomb shades include a new inner pocket, or “honeycomb within a honeycomb.” Energy efficiency is measured in R-value. The higher the R-value, the higher the efficiency. A typical, double-paned clear glass window has an R-value of about 1.75. With honeycomb blinds, the same window has an R-value of 7.73.

Shading of External spaces reduces summer temperatures, improves comfort and saves energy.

Direct sun can generate the same heat as a single bar radiator over each square metre of a surface. Shading can block up to 90 per cent of this heat.

Shading of glass to reduce unwanted heat gain is critical. Unprotected glass is often the greatest source of unwanted heat gain in a home.

Radiant heat from the sun passes through glass and is absorbed by building elements and furnishings, which then re-radiate it.

In most climates, ‘trapping’ radiant heat is desirable for winter heating but must be avoided in summer.

Adjustable shading from Awnings, patio blinds and shutters, allows you to choose

  • the desired level of shade. This is particularly
  • useful in spring and autumn when heating and cooling needs are variable.

The GREENGUARD Advantage

For improved air quality, choose from our range of fabrics which have achieved the Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certification.  GREENGUARD Certification allows parents, teachers and schools to rest easy knowing these products have been independently tested and verified to meet strict emission levels of pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates.   Breathing these pollutants is linked to a variety of health problems, including allergies, asthma, cardiovascular disease, reproductive disorders and some forms of cancer.  To protect your families health, ask for the North Shore Shutters Greenguard certified range.
